BIG BET POKER CONCEPTS

SPECIFIC POKER FORMS

Pot Limit & No Limit Poker : Play Poker

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF POKER

You should be a wise gambler and a skilful player to win money at big-bet poker or any other kind of card game. This chapter will make you understand this aspect. However, you will not necessarily become a winning poker player by following these percepts. But, it will make sure that you are not a easy prey when you enter the poker room.

(1) NEVER PLAY WITH MONEY YOU CANT AFFORD TO LOSE

Everything you have on the table is in play at pot-limit poker and could be lost on one hand. It is quite unreasonable to play pot-limit poker thinking that you will put a part of your funds into the pot, unless you have a cinch.

Most money in poker is made on hands where there is certain possibility of ending up losing. Not willing to follow through on good hands can be a terrible handicap and far outweighs any technical advantage you have over your rival poker players.

In a no-limit hold’em game, a poker player had a very lucky run. He was in desperate financial condition when the game started. First he won enough to pay the rent, then to pay all the money he owned. At his peak, his whole life had turned around. Now, he could also gift his wife a new dress.

He picked up two aces at this point. There was fierce betting before the flop and before it got to him, there was a bet and three raises. Committing all his money was the correct poker move. However, the big threat of financial ruin made him muck the aces and quit the game. It is clear that he should have gone home earlier.

(2) ALWAYS KNOW THE RULES OF THE GAME

It seems so obvious yet we’ve fallen into the trap. Once, Stewart was playing in a draw poker game. When he had four of a kind, he bet out and everyone passed. He threw his hand away sight-unseen.

He told about his monster hand in a conversation with him a bit later after the play. He commented that you should have shown that and honors were paid for four of a kind or a straight flush. There are special house rules for every poker cardroom which you should learn.

(3) DON’T STEAM

Steaming is defined as playing unsoundly to increase the money fluctuation when you are losing. In the gambling world, this is the number one vice. Steaming is well related to the game of poker because if you are willing to take a bit the worst of it, then a poker-player can substantially increase the stakes.

In case of no-limit poker and pot-limit poker, this is particularly true. Trying to get bigger pots by early raises are typical traits of a steamer. As he does this on hands too weak for such betting his next step is to try and run rival poker player out of the pot with bluffs and semi-bluffs.

While doing this if he manages to catch some hands he can change a losing session into a winning one. This unsound play will more often than not prove suicidal. Good self-control should be acquired first by every successful poker gambler. Instead of trying to win every session, learn to keep score by the week, month or year.

In no limit poker or pot-limit poker games there is a lit of money to be won from steamers. Don’t allow yourself to sink to the level of wild poker player you are trying to beat.

(4) NEVER PLAY WHEN OFF-BALANCE

When you are upset, feeling sick or have an intuition that you are going to lose, just don’t play. There’ll always be another poker game.

A poker player having a marvelous hand but failing to raise and capitalize on his good fortune is one of the most ridiculous errors we have encountered. When asked for the reason, the answer is, “I’ve been doing so badly I didn’t want to take the risk.” So, his bad run keeps on continuing.

The possibility of cheating, whether real or imagined constituting the big pot factor is more dangerous than in limit –poker. After returning from a phone call to his seat, an Omaha poker player found a hand containing two aces. The flop came A-10-10, giving him aces full.

He was surprised when there was bet and a raise before he acted. Fearing a set-up, he mucked his hand. The poker players who held the case 10 and were filled up were beaten by one poker player who won the pot with A-10.

The aces full player would have tripled his money if he hadn’t been so suspicious. In games where you feel uncomfortable, don’t play in those games. Neither, you want to be cheated nor you want to play a hand abnormally fearing some malpractice.

(5) RUN YOUR PROFITS AND CUT YOUR LOSSES

Stock market teaches you this. When you are winning in the game of poker you feel better, play better and the rival poker player fears you. Since, intimidation plays such a vital role, the last factor is of uttermost importance.

Nobody plays as well when losing as when winning. To sit out of a few hands after losing a major pot is not a bad idea. Your equanimity shouldn’t get upset by losing. However, eventually it will, and once this happens, obey the fourth commandment and quit.
